What is Dallisgrass?

Dallisgrass is a perennial weed that grows in clumps and produces tall stalks with spikelets, each one covered in black hairs. Several stalks may appear from the center of the clump. The leaves are rolled in the bud, and the seeds begin to emerge once the soil temperatures reach at least 60 degrees F.

How to Get Rid of Dallisgrass Weeds

If the seeds have yet to show, it's wise to dig out the clump before they appear. Apply a postemergent herbicide labeled for dallisgrass if seeds are present. Applying pre-emergent herbicides containing dithiopyr in the early spring can also help to control this weed. If dallisgrass invades ornamental beds, cover the pre-emergent herbicide layer with mulch.
