Mosquitoes

Though they thrive in the Southeast, mosquitoes are found throughout the States during the summer months. They first arrive in early spring and finally disappear in late fall depending on the location. Though some people light citronella candles or wear insect repellent, these nuisance pests eventually send people back indoors to escape the constant biting and itching. It's better to treat the problem with mosquito control products for quick and long-lasting results.

Why are Mosquitoes a Problem?

The female mosquito feeds on people when she's ready to breed, requiring the protein-rich blood to produce her brood. The males don't bite people and prefer plant nectar as a food source; the females also feed on nectar when they're not breeding. A single female can lay as many as 200 eggs at a time, sparking a massive infestation in just one breeding cycle. These pests are known to transmit diseases to people, such as the West Nile virus and the Zika virus, so it's important to eliminate the pests before they multiply.

How to Identify Mosquitoes

A mosquito looks like a skinny fly with two wings and hairy scales covering its body. It also has a piercing proboscis, which allows it to penetrate the skin and to suck the blood from its host. Some species have white bands covering the abdomen while others have black and white stripes only on their legs. The Asian tiger mosquito is covered with stripes on every part of its body.

Pest Control for Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes usually stay within a mile radius of where they were born. The females lay their eggs in water, so it's wise to remove any standing water from your property to deter an unwanted infestation. When treating your yard for mosquitoes, you have a few options:

  • Liquid insecticides
  • Insect traps
  • Pest strips

You can mix a liquid insecticide in a tank and spray the mixture in the target area. Some liquid insecticides are ready to be used as soon as you open the top while others come in the form of water-soluble granules and require mixing. You can also use spray cans such as Temprid Ready Spray to treat mosquitoes on the spot. Hanging pest strips will capture mosquitoes in the vicinity, and insect traps are always good for catching stray mosquitoes in areas where you entertain outdoors.

Mosquitoes Require Serious Control Products

If you don't treat mosquitoes in your yard, you'll spend most of the summer indoors or using ineffective methods to deter them. Pedchem has numerous mosquito control products available to kill and to control the mosquito population. Whether it's a tank mix or an aerosol spray, you can knock down mosquitoes quickly and prevent infestations during the peak breeding months.
